Elizabeth Feb. 17, 2017 Succulent Garden is dog friendly Elizabeth Feb. 17, 2017 Succulent Garden is dog friendly We enjoyed our time here. Moorten is listed on bringfido.com and it is true, dogs are allowed in. They were pleased that we travel with our own dog clean up supplies. All the employees we interacted with were friendly. The garden was beautiful. If you like succulents this is the place to be. In addition to a nice variety of succulents for sale, they have some beautiful artwork. For a small attraction this was great. Would have given 5 stars for more information about the plants on signage or via qr codes. Also parking was scarce. Still a very enjoyable stop. Founded in 1938, the Moorten Botanical Garden features over 3000 varieties of succulents, cacti, yucca, and other plants. (It’s also home to the world’s first Cactarium— a term coined by the Moorten family over 70 years ago.) As a result, the current owner, Clark Moorten, is never at a loss for company: the garden is visited by adventurers and garden aficionados from all over the world, and has become an Instagram phenomenon in recent months.

Thomas J. Story Pinterest PagesPrevious 8 of 10 Next View All Moorten Botanical Garden Chester Moorten was one of silent film’s original Keystone Kops. But when the silents went bust, he retreated to the desert to start a nursery, acquiring a new profession that matched his nickname “Cactus Slim.” Today Chester’s son, Clark, is in charge of a stunning collection of more than 3,000 species of cactus and other desert-adapted plants. The garden doesn’t take itself too seriously—kitschy knickknacks mingle with the plants, and a sign directs you to the “World’s First Cactarium”—a made-up term for the greenhouse. As for Clark Moorten, he pretends to be as bristly as his cactus collection but is ready to talk plants to anyone who will listen. One good story: That sideways-growing palm is the result of a lightning strike in the 1950s. $5; closed Wed; 1701 S. Palm Canyon Dr., Palm Springs;
