Battery-powered Z-Wave devices, such as this sensor, “wake up” when triggered and broadcast a Z-Wave alarm signal, which can in turn be used to activate other devices or perform preprogrammed tasks. Any Z-Wave enabled device displaying the Z-Wave logo can be used with Z-Wave devices from other manufacturers. This sensor is designed to detect angular changes, such as would occur when a garage door is opened. Gets the job done, but far from ideal I bought two of these to monitor the state of my garage doors. I run HomeAssistant on a raspberry pi with a z-stick z-wave controller. These sensors work great with my setup, no issues adding them to my z-wave network.However, the ball switches in these things kind of suck. I had a couple instances where the sensor didn't register the tilt change, so I replaced the ball bearing tilt sensor with a mercury tilt sensor. The sensor works much more reliably now! My only other gripe with these, and it is a common z-wave occurrence, is the lack of encryption on the z-wave protocol. While newer sensors have encryption enabled, this sensor unfortunately does not. Not a huge deal since it is a passive sensor, but it would be nice to have all my z-wave devices implement the same security protocols. Was this review helpful?
